David Andrews ZL2SX honoured by NZART

David ZL2SX was made Honourable Life Member of NZART at a presentation at the annual conference held at Hastings. In presenting the citation Stuart Watchman ZL2TW, Acting President of NZART, commented on David’s outstanding service to the association over a period of more than 30 years, and said that the award was in recognition of his meritorious service to all Amateurs.

Some highlights of David’s service to fellow Amateurs that were mentioned in the Award Citation are:

  • Member of FMWG frequency management working group, 1984-1987.
  • Inaugural Chairman of FMTAG frequency management and technical advisory group, and has served in this capacity for over 21 years.
  • Amateur of the Year in 1991.
  • Primarily responsible for CAA moving their ATC radar from the Amateur 23cm band.
  • Primarily responsible for oil industry moving their SYLEDIS positioning system from the Amateur 70cm band.
  • Responsible for successfully negotiating a new frequency allocation of 165KHz-190KHz for Amateur use.
  • Responsible for successfully negotiating a new frequency allocation of 922MHz-927MHz for Amateur use.
  • Responsible for successfully obtaining improved access to the frequency allocation of 614MHz-622MHz (Channel 39) for Amateur use.
  • Responsible for successfully negotiating permanent access to Egmont and Blue Duck sites for national system stations for Amateur use. Without these the national system would not have been operationally achieved.
  • Served as Councillor of NZART 1993-1999.
  • Stalwart of the Wellington VHF Group over 35 years, holding variously the positions of President 1983-1985 and 1990-1991, Vice-President 1982-1983 and 1991-1993, Committee Member, and Examiner. David was made a Life Member of the Group in 1990.
